Running to Honor and Respect, and Never Forget

Dear Family and Friends,

I am happy to once again join up with the National Stroke Association Challenge Team to run in the 2012 ING New York City Marathon. This will be my 22nd Marathon, and 4th NYC Marathon with the N.Stroke Challenge team.

Joining this group has an ever expanding personal meaning for me: In Oct. 2005, my mother, Elizabeth, who never missed any of my NYC Marathon appearances, no matter the weather or time, suffered from a number of devastating strokes that paralyzed her left side, and seriously debilitated her right side. The extent was so severe, she needed round-the-clock care as she was unable to perform the basic daily activities of living, such as speaking, dressing, eating, walking etc.
She endured this condition for over 2 years until January 2008 when, sadly, she passed away from complications related to her strokes.

I also run mindful of others in my community who have been recently affected by stroke:

-my former co-worker, Artem M, who passed away this year from a stroke event;

-my next door neighbor George S. who struggles with aphasia from his stroke;

and others who as best they can, continue to live out their lives, despite the severity of the strokes they've suffered. Their lives have been altered, yet they adapt and move on with Courage and Determination to reclaim all they can to live a Good Life.

It can be so easy to take for granted all the simple everyday things we do, but it can all change drastically in a moment. So I continue to train for the NYCM each year, cherishing Every day given to me.

Being prepared for quick action is of VITAL Importance. Please take a few moments to visit the link below & familiarize yourself with the common warning signs of a stroke. Doing so could help you save the life of someone you know and/or love, maybe even your own.

Despite this rough economy, whatever you consider to donate to my fundraising effort will be most greatly appreciated. I Thank you in advance for sponsoring my run in support of all the good work the National Stroke Association does. Cheers!
