We at National Stroke Association and the thousands of people we interact with every year offer our sincere thanks.
Why I Run...
It was almost five years ago that my dad suffered from a stroke. Fortunately, my mom was aware of the symptoms and acted fast in getting him medical attention. Not everyone is as lucky as my dad was and, equally as scary, not everyone is aware of the symptoms of stroke.
After running the ING NYC Marathon last year as a member of the National Stroke Association team it seemed natural to take on the challenge once more this year. The 26.2 miles were hard but I remind myself that all the training and the actual event are not nearly as difficult as the recovery process for stroke victims. It is for this reason that I am proud to undergo the grueling training and run in an effort to raise both awareness and funds for a cause so close to my heart.
Almost 795,000 Americans will experience a stroke in 2012
At least one in four (25-35 percent) of people who have a stroke each year will experience another one in their lifetime
Within five years of a first stroke, the risk for another stroke can increase by more than 40 percent
Recurrent strokes often have a higher rate of death and disability
