My name is Nataly Salas, I am 26 years old and I am a Children’s Social Worker. My mom, Maria, suffered a debilitating stroke in August of 2015, which changed her life and mine forever. I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was extremely painful, traumatizing; it changed everything. My mother spent two months in the hospital; the left side of her brain was affected. My mother miraculously survived, but her speech has been significantly affected, and she is unable to walk well. My mother is in a skilled nursing facility, as I am basically alone in helping care for her, and I had no other option. However, I visit her every day and make sure she is cared for. I am able to take her out on weekends, usually to the mall or park. I’m helping her practice her speech, walk, and keep her brain stimulated as much as possible. No matter how tired I am from working all day, I head straight to the skilled nursing facility after work. I help my mom brush her teeth, make sure she has diapers, water bottles, clean clothes, anything that she needs. I also moved apartments , closer to the nursing facility, to facilitate things for her and myself. It’s changed my life, but I continue to do this because my mother needs me.
I am raising awareness and celebrating stroke survivors at the Orange County Comeback Trail 5K - a charity event that supports the National Stroke Association. This 5K walk/fun-run empowers stroke survivors and caregivers to #ComebackStrong. I have set a fundraising goal to support the stroke rehabilitation and prevention efforts of the National Stroke Association.
Please support me, and the 7 million stroke survivors in the United Sates, by making a donation today. Together, we can empower survivors and caregivers as they come back strong from stroke.
