Barbara K.

Support Group Leader

Barb is our therapeutic recreation specialist at Avera St. Luke's Rehabilitation Center. Stroke has a physical side, but also has the spiritual and emotional side which affects a survivor’s recovery. This is where Barb's gifts become vital in the recovery process. We know how powerful a positive attitude is in recovery. All of a sudden, from the room of a severely depressed patient, we hear the survivor and Barb laughing. During the next session, the tears of healing fall freely and the survivor can take the next step in their recovery. It is the miracle of healing that flows from Barb to the stroke survivor. Barb thinks outside the box. She has arranged for survivors to get to the sale barn where their cattle are being sold at auction, to hunt and fish, knit with one hand and make holiday meals for their families. She thinks in possibilities. When we follow up with survivors and families after discharge, Barb's name and how she helped them "survive" their acute recovery comes up consistently. She personally invites all survivors and caregivers to take the next step after acute rehab by inviting them to the Stroke Support Group at discharge. She facilitates and empowers the support group to learn and to advocate for other survivors. She has taken part in a “meet your congressman” forum regarding concerns of rehabilitation care of stroke survivors and their caregivers. It is privilege to submit Barb, a person who has such a positive impact on the recovery of stroke survivors.
