William D.

Survivor & Support Group Leader

Since 2006 I have been an active member, and now president, of ARI stroke support group in Morristown, New Jersey. I suffered my stroke on October 8, 2003 and spent three months in a rehab facility until my release in early January 2004. In 2004, I received at home therapy, and subsequently outpatient therapy. All of this led to joining a post stroke care workout regimen at the rehab hospital I was in during my acute care.

Over the last three years, I have volunteered at the exact same hospital where I convalesced at pt and ot gyms. The reward I feel cannot be measured in words. I began to realize at the hospital and at group meetings, that caregivers and survivors on occasion expressed lack of knowledge about stroke, and their loved ones type of stroke. On June 2, 2010, Lois Firzlaff, a caregiver and V.P. of our group, and I made a 10 minute video about stroke and awareness. We have been mentoring families and survivors about their introduction to stroke, and offer the video as an educational tool for them. I have also been making personal presentations to senior groups in the hospital's area.

Since October 2010, I have spoken to or have booked six appearances to date, comprising of 500 or more attendees in total. My passion for this knows no bounds. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about a job I simply love.
