Caregiver & Family

My husband, Herb, had a massive ischemic stroke almost 10 years ago on July 17, 2001. Together, we have battled the awful remnants of stroke and have learned to seek a new normalcy. Using the knowledge we gained from learning to find medical support and seek quality in our everyday lives, we wrote two books, One Stroke, Two Survivors and Lessons Learned: Stroke Recovery From a Caregiver's Perspective, published by the Cleveland Clinic Press. We offer them for free through several major stroke centers, and we plan to put them online for free downloading. One Stroke, Two Survivors is written in both of our voices. Emails come to us from people, who have found our books in libraries all over the world, asking for guidance and support.  Stroke, especially massive stroke, turns not only the survivor's life upside down, but it also affects the spouse and entire family. Herb and I are fighters, but sometimes the rest of the world is dense. We've been through unusual experiences, including a motel fire where we were trapped on a sixth floor and no one came for us. We have also confronted current airport security and unrealistic demands. But we continue living and sharing our experiences so that we can help make recovery easier for others as well as for ourselves. You may contact us at 216-491-8114.
